The Buffalo Sabres' 2020-21 season came to a close on Saturday afternoon in shutout fashion. The blue and gold were blanked by Maxime Lagace and the Penguins, 1-0 at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

After a scoreless first 20 minutes, the Penguins took the lead just 1:58 into the second period. Veteran forward Jeff Carter's 17th goal of the season, and fifth goal in the last two games against the Sabres, gave the home side a 1-0 edge.

Buffalo trailed on the scoreboard through 40 minutes of play, despite owning a 24-9 shot advantage over Pittsburgh.

The third period was a scoreless one as well, with Buffalo not able to find the equalizer against Lagace and the Penguins. Sam Reinhart had a golden opportunity inside the final 30 seconds of regulation, but the cross-ice pass from Victor Olofsson hopped up off his skate and wide of the net.

The buzzer also sounded for Lagace's first career shutout, as the netminder earned his first win since Dec. 9, 2017 as a member of the expansion Vegas Golden Knights.

The loss put a finishing touch on Buffalo's regular-season record as well, as the Sabres posted a 15-34-7 record for 37 points overall.
