Columbus, Ohio (WGR 550) - After opening the 2022 preseason with a pair of wins, the Buffalo Sabres finally dropped their first exhibition game of the year.

The Sabres fell behind early, and failed to recover on the road in a 4-1 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets on Wednesday night at Nationwide Arena.

The game's opening goal went to Columbus about nine minutes into the contest, as Emil Bemstrom was on the receiving end of a beautiful passing play to re-direct a pass from teammate Stanislav Svozil past Sabres goalie Eric Comrie.

Nearly five minutes later, the Blue Jackets extended their lead to 2-0 on the man advantage, as forward Kirill Marchenko fired a wicked wrist shot over the glove hand of Comrie.

Through the opening 20 minutes, Columbus ended up outshooting Buffalo, 13-2, en route to the early 2-0 advantage.

The Sabres finally got on the board at the 3:49 mark of the second period shortly after a faceoff win in the offensive zone. After skating with the puck at full speed behind the net, Sabres winger Jack Quinn found a pinching Chase Priskie sneaking in from the point, as he one-timed a shot past goalie Daniil Tarasov for the goal.

The Sabres responded much better in the second period, playing with more speed and spending more time in the offensive zone, but still only came away with one goal.

After a continued push into the third period, the Sabres eventually caved almost eight minutes into the frame, as veteran Jakub Voracek came off the Columbus bench and snuck in past the Buffalo defense. His goal through the five-hole of Comrie game the Blue Jackets the extra cushion they needed.

With the Sabres continuing to fight on the power play, a mistake letting Carson Meyer behind the defense cost Buffalo a shorthanded goal, as the Blue Jackets winger scored on the backhand over an outstretched Comrie.

That goal ended up capping the scoring on the night, with Buffalo dropping its first preseason game of the campaign.
