Buffalo, N.Y. (WGR 550) – The Buffalo Sabres were able to get both Rasmus Dahlin and Owen Power signed to long-term contract extensions before the start of the 2023-24 regular season on Thursday.

It was announced Wednesday night that Power has inked a new seven-year deal with the Sabres worth $58.45 million, which equivalates to an average annual value of $8.35 million.

According to CapFriendly, Power will have a five-team no-trade list in Years 6 and 7 of his new contract that kicks in at the start of next season.

Power was the first overall pick of the Sabres in the 2021 NHL Draft. In 87 NHL games to this point of his young career, the 20-year-old has six goals and 32 assists for 38 points.

The defenseman becomes the fifth young core player that general manager Kevyn Adams has locked up to a long-term deal. That group includes Dahlin, Tage Thompson, Dylan Cozens and Mattias Samuelsson.

I think the Sabres got a pretty team-friendly deal here.

The Ottawa Senators drafted Jake Sanderson with the fifth overall pick in the 2020 NHL Draft and signed him to an eight-year contract extension this offseason worth $64.4 million. That averages out to a cap hit of $8.05 million per-year.

In the long run, I think Power will be a much better player.

Other players that will need new contracts with the Sabres next season include Casey Mittelstadt, Eric Comrie, Henri Jokiharju, Erik Johnson, Kyle Okposo, Zemgus Girgensons, Peyton Krebs, Victor Olofsson, Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen, Tyson Jost and Jacob Bryson.
