Buffalo, N.Y. (WGR Sports Radio 550) - With their fifth-round pick (156th overall) in the 2026 NHL Draft, the Buffalo Sabres made some history with the selection of forward Domán Szongoth from KooKoo's U20 SM-Sarja program in Finland.

In 44 games last season at the Finnish junior level, Szongoth tallied 10 goals and 18 assists for 28 points. That put him fourth in team scoring for both assists and points.
Over the course of two seasons playing in Finland, Szongoth has played 81 games and has a combine 44 points (19+25).
Szongoth is the first player born in Hungary to be drafted in the NHL Draft since János Vas was selected in the second round (32nd overall) of the 2002 NHL Draft by the Dallas Stars. He is only the fourth Hungarian player ever selected in an NHL Draft.
No Hungarian player has ever played a regular-season game in NHL history.
At the international level, Szongoth represented Hungary at the 2026 IIHF World Championship, where he tallied one point. He also represented Hungary in the 2026 IIHF World Junior Championship Division I-B tournament, and also served as a captain for Hungary in the 2026 IIHF U18 World Championship Division I-A.
The Sabres will next select with the 188th pick in the sixth round of the draft.
