Buffalo, N.Y. (WGR 550) – NHL Free Agency isn’t just for the Buffalo Sabres' roster. They also have to make signings for the Rochester Americans in the American Hockey League.
Signing two-way contracts on Wednesday included Sabres' 2013 sixth round pick Sean Malone, as well as defensemen Brandon Davidson and Jimmy Schuldt. All three got one-year deals worth $750,000.
After leaving Harvard University in 2017, Malone played one game with the Sabres and then spent three years with the Amerks, netting 28 goals and 37 assists for 65 points in 169 games.
In July of 2020, Malone inked a free agent deal with the Nashville Predators and played one game with them picking up an assist for his first NHL point. Malone played 23 games with the Chicago Wolves scoring 5 goals and 10 assists for 15 points.
Davidson spent most of last season on the Sabres taxi squad playing six games with Buffalo and two more with Rochester. He didn’t pick up a point in either place.
Davidson was a sixth round pick of the Edmonton Oilers in 2010. He’s played 180 NHL games with Edmonton, Buffalo, the Montreal Canadiens, New York Islanders, Chicago Blackhawks, Calgary Flames and San Jose Sharks.
Davidson has nine career goals and 14 assists for 23 points.
After four years at St. Cloud State University, Schuldt signed his entry-level contract with the Vegas Golden Knights. In 2019, he played one game with Vegas, picking up one assist. In the 2019-20 season, he played 52 games with the Wolves, scoring six goals and 15 assists for 21 points.
Last season, Schuldt was with the Henderson Silver Knights, scoring six goals and eight assists for 14 points in 38 games.
