Despite a depleted roster to start the road trip, the Buffalo Sabres were able to defeat the Arizona Coyotes, 3-1, on Saturday night at Gila River Arena.

The Sabres needed to dress seven defenseman, because of the added players entering COVID-19 protocols earlier on Saturday. However, defenseman Will Butcher suffered a lower-body injury less than three minutes into the game, putting the team down another player.

Kyle Okposo was activated off injured reserve prior to Saturday's game and scored a power play goal midway through the opening period. The veteran's eighth goal of the season gave Buffalo a 1-0 lead. It came with Lawson Crouse in the penalty box due to a hooking minor.

Casey Mittelstadt and Peyton Krebs combined on a 2-on-1 chance in the offensive zone and doubled the Sabres' lead to 2-0. The goal is Krebs third of the season with Mittelstadt and Alex Tuch getting credit for the assists.

Tuch was able to score a goal of his own part way through the second period. This time, it was Krebs to set up the score, making it 3-0 in favor of Buffalo. Tage Thompson received the secondary assist on Tuch's fourth goal of the year.

Shayne Gostisbehere broke up Craig Anderson's shutout bid with just over eight minutes remaining in regulation. The Sabres' netminder was activated off of injured reserve Saturday afternoon in order to make the start for the team. Gostisbehere's goal cut Arizona's deficit to 3-1 in the third period.

Anderson made 28 saves to help secure the Sabres victory. Arizona had several quality scoring chances with goalie Karel Vejmelka pulled in favor of an extra attacker late in the third.
