White Sox manager Tony La Russa will be away from the team and out indefinitely as he undergoes further testing for a medical issue, the team said Wednesday.

La Russa will undergo tests on his heart, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reported. The White Sox didn't specify what type of testing La Russa will undergo, only saying he'll go to Arizona to be seen by his personal physicians. A potential return to the dugout for La Russa will be dependent on the results of his medical evaluations, the team said.

The 77-year-old La Russa didn't manage in the White Sox’s 9-7 loss to the Royals on Tuesday evening. He was with the team for batting practice and held his pregame media session before the club announced about an hour before first pitch that he wouldn’t manage due to a health matter.

On a five-game losing streak amid an underachieving season, the White Sox are 63-66 and trail the AL Central-leading Guardians by six games. Bench coach Miguel Cairo is serving as the White Sox's acting manager in La Russa's absence.
