April 15, 2020 McGowens entered the transfer portal in March, a decision that coach Jeff Capel said didn't surprise him. McGowens was Capel's first recruit and was a two-year starter, averaging 11.5 ppg. He chose Nebraska over Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn and Ole Miss.
McGowens will be reunited with former Pitt teammate Shamiel Stevenson. McGowens is expected to sit out the 2020-21 season under the current NCAA transfer rule.
