Denver, CO (WBEN) - Williamsville East catcher Joe Mack had his dream come true Sunday during the opening round of the 2021 MLB Draft when he was selected with the 31st overall pick by the Miami Marlins.
Heading into the draft, Mack was expected to be selected in the first round, rated as the 19th overall prospect.
The 18-year-old earned the WNY All-Coaches Player of the Year award two times and posted a .500 batting average in 21 games as a senior with eight home runs, 22 RBI and 26 stolen bases.
Mack has a major league decision to make now, as he is currently committed to play for Clemson University in the fall.
The Marlins had two picks in the first round of the 2021 MLB Draft, also using the 16th overall pick to select shortstop Kahlil Watson from Wake Forest High School in North Carolina.
The Pittsburgh Pirates owned the first overall pick in the 2021 MLB Draft and selected catcher Henry Davis out of the University of Louisville. The first pitcher to be selected in the draft ended up being Jack Leiter, son of former MLB pitcher Al Leiter, who went second overall to the Texas Rangers.
