New COVID-19 vaccine megasite to open in Delaware

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Delaware has a new vaccine megasite opening this weekend.

The site at Dover International Speedway is meant for people to get their second shots if they got their first dose at one of the state-run DMV events last month or at Sallies in Wilmington.

Delaware Emergency Management Agency Director A.J. Schall said they chose this location because there’s “an efficiency there.”

“We’re going to be doing 18,000 vaccinations over the course of five days. We have 200-plus federal partners coming in here, not including the assistance we’ll need from DelDOT and law enforcement and local EMS agencies to support this and it’s just the economy of scale,” he said.

The site is supposed to open Saturday, but that could get pushed back a day or two depending on this week’s weather.

Both Moderna and Pfizer shots will be available.

Registration starts Wednesday at 11 a.m.
