Posted to both their social media pages, their statement reads, “For some time, we have considered transforming our relationship, and it is after careful consideration that we have decided to end our marriage with love, respect, and dignity for our children.”
Latin Pop star Ricky Martin and Jwan Yosef met in 2015, five years after Martin came out to the general public. “The word 'happiness' takes on a new meaning for me as of today… I am proud to say that I am a fortunate homosexual man. I am very blessed to be who I am” he wrote on his website. 2010 was a different time for the LGBTQ+ community, but Martin looks back on the letter with pride. “ I wrote it and I pressed send, and then I cried like crazy,” he told Apple Music in 2020. “And I’ve been super happy ever since.” He and Swedish painter Jwan Yosef officially came out as a couple on the red carpet in 2016, and were later engaged that year.
Yet as they divorce, the couple is dedicated to, “preserving and honoring what we have experienced as a couple all of these wonderful years.” Their announcement continues, “Oour greatest desire now is to continue having a healthy family dynamic and a relationship centered on our genuine friendship as we continue the joint upbringing of our children.” The ex-couple share two young children together, daughter Lucia and son Renn, both born via surrogates just a year apart. It’s believed that Martin will continue to raise his twin sons, Matteo and Valentino, as a single parent.
The statement ends by thanking fans for their “love and support”, and reassures that Martin and Yosef are still linked together. “We are united in nurturing this new chapter of our lives,” they wrote.
