Miami Norland’s Charles Roberts III had a good season for the Vikings, but last Friday night, he received more attention than the 10 games his team played.
In a 21-12 win over Broward in the annual matchup, sponsored this year by Mario Smith and Tru Prep Academy at Milander Stadium, Roberts came up with nine catches and a TD reception.
It’s game like this that give prospects an opportunity to showcase their skills that may have been missed during the season.
With schools such as St. Thomas University, Keiser University, Florida Memorial University and ASA Miami on hand, it was a chance for him to shine.
“It’s a game like this against other top player where coaches can see what you do,” Roberts said. “I am glad we had the opportunity to play this game.”
While Roberts and Miami Central’s Katravis Marsh were getting a chance to use this game for extra film, they were not alone.
Athletes without any college interest used this game to put themselves out there – in perhaps one of the most talented regions of the country.
MIAMI-DADE GETS A HUGE BOOST
Miami-Dade opened the scoring with 9:58 remaining in the first quarter when Miami Central quarterback Katravis Marsh, headed to the University of South Florida, found Roberts open from 7 yards out for a 7-0 lead.
Broward came back at the 8:08 mark of the opening quarter when Dillard quarterback Zamir Jones found Fort Lauderdale’s Kevin Larkins Jr. from 30 yards out and cut the margin to 7-6.
Broward took the lead at 12-7 with just :55 second left in the first quarter when Coral Glades’ defensive back Isaiah Brown picked off a pass and raced 25 yards with it. He was chosen as the game’s Defensive MVP.
Miami-Dade would take the lead for good when Marsh, the Offensive MVP of the game, found Miami Carol City’s D’Andre Stafford from the 7 and a 14-12 lead early in the second quarter.
When Marsh found Miami Northwestern’s Kemani Brown from 18 yards out with just :53 seconds left in the first, it was 21-12 and another big win in this historic series.
While many areas of the nation are digging out from snow – or have moved on to the next cycle of recruits, Miami-Dade and Broward Counties were still putting the finishing touches from the 2019 season – as Miami-Dade head coach Gary Sanchez (Hialeah) and Broward’s Richard Dunbar (Fort Lauderdale) got all their prospects into the game.
