It’s the most prospect rich region in the country – and this evening (7:30), Miami-Dade and Broward Counties will once again square off in an all-star game.
These two counties, who are responsible for over 100 current NFL players, get together for an annual matchup that features some of the top seniors in the #305 and #954 at Milander Stadium (4700 Palm Avenue, Hialeah, FL 33013).
The two teams will be headed up by playoff coaches Richard Dunbar (Fort Lauderdale) and Gary Sanchez of Hialeah – in a game that the Miami Dolphins sponsored for a number of years, but opted out this season.
With so many athletes still not having a college to attend, this game not being played would have really been tragic, and that’s why Mario Smith and Tru Foundation Sports Academy didn’t skip a beat.
On the heels of his annual Public vs. Private game that was held two weeks ago, Smith and his team quickly put together things with the help of the BCAA and Miami-Dade County coaches who sent players to compete in this game.
Broward County had already been prepared for this contest back in November by getting a team selected. When the game was initially called off, players were already in place and coaches selected.
“We just could not see this game going away,” Smith said. “I played here and coached in south Florida, so I know how very important it is to these young men to get additional film and experience so college coaches will get the chance to see for themselves in all-star game competition.
Through his Tru Prep Foundation, Smith got other businesses and support for this game to become a reality – and it promises to be a major show – with top players ready to showcase their many skills.
The game has long been a tradition of bragging rights that Wesley Frater began nearly three decades ago and then the Dolphins picked up the contest – before opting out of the game this season.
Because many seniors either leave for school early or participate in other sports, getting players has never been easy, but when this game was announced, and coaches selected, pride once again is the common theme for Friday night’s game.
