When it comes to Super Bowl week, you never know what is going to happen – or who will pop up at one of the hundreds of events.
Miami High, Miami Edison, Dr. Krop and Miami Central girls’ flag football teams found that out for themselves last Friday at the NFL Experience at the Miami Beach Convention Center.
Scheduled to play for the title in the Nike Miami Dolphins’ 7-on-7 event – in a tournament that began three weeks ago at the practice facility in Davie, the teams, coaches and their fans were treated to much more than a flag football event.
Before the tournament began, the teams were surprised by eight Kansas City Chiefs cheerleaders, who not only came by for moral support, but managed to stay around for two hours to cheer the programs on during very busy time before Sunday’s Super Bowl.
In addition, Seattle Seahawks teammates and brother Shaquem and Shaquill Griffin stopped by to add support the teams.
But the biggest surprise of the day came when Dolphins’ Director of Youth Programs and Camps RaShauna Hamilton introduced a pair of special coaches who would help the teams out during the first quarter of the opening game between Miami High and Miami Central.
As Mr. & Mrs. Wilson – aka – Russell and Ciara were announced, the emotions went from screams to cries to a once in a lifetime opportunity.
“We all looked at each other and said, what!, is this really happening,” said UCF basketball commitment and the star of Miami High’s championship flag football team Colleen Bucknor. “This was really a surprise and very special for all of us.”
All the teams had the chance to take photos and talk with both Russell and Ciara before the event began. It was indeed truly an opportunity of a lifetime.
With the boys’ teams from each school on hand for support, the tournament was indeed something very specials.
STINGAREES WIN IT ALL
With Bucknor making huge catches, Miami High ended up taking the team title – opening with that 19-0 win against Miami Central.
Dr. Krop shut down Edison in the first game, 13-0, setting up a very exciting final between the Lady Stingarees and the Lady Lightning. In the end, Miami High came away with a 12-6 win for the title.
