(HOUSTON) SportsRadio 610 -- One of Houston's most famous quarterbacks mentioned a name for the Texans' head coaching vacancy that had not come up much since Bill O'Brien was fired in October.
Part of that could because this former head coach was a postseason doormat for the Texans in their first seasons making it there.
But Andre Ware, the Texans Radio broadcaster and the University of Houston's lone Heisman Trophy winner, said on In The Loop earlier this week that Marvin Lewis should get serious consideration.
Ware covered the Arizona State-Arizona game Dec. 11, which Arizona State won handedly. Their co-defensive coordinator is Marvin Lewis, the former Cincinnati Bengals head coach, and Ware said he was impressed when they met pregame.
"I think it's someone that has done more with less," Ware said. "When you know the situation you're going to get yourself into as the next head coach of this team, knowing that you're not going to have draft picks for next year and there are some constraints on salaries and things of that sort, and you're used to doing that. ...
"I could not have been more impressed with an individual. You think about Cincinnati and the ownership there, they don't spend a lot of money. They try to do it on the cheap and it's been that way for years. But Marvin won a lot there. So I'm thinking about this as I'm processing this whole coaching search for the Texans. That's a name that should be on the list because he's done more with less and he's won over a period of time."
Lewis has a record of 131-129-3 (.504) as a head coach and a damning 0-7 record in the postseason.
Two of those postseason losses were against the Texans in the 2011 and 2012 Wild Card rounds, which were the franchise's first and second postseason wins.
But Ware brings up an interesting point. The Texans do not have a lot of resources beyond what they are already spending.
No first-round draft pick. Salary cap uncertainty.
"Someone who's done more with less" is a compelling case for Lewis, even if such a hire wouldn't inspire the fan base or win the introductory press conference.
