The Philadelphia Eagles and San Francisco 49ers met in last year’s NFC Championship Game and they are the only two undefeated teams remaining in the conference this season. Both teams, along with the Dallas Cowboys, were expected to be the top contenders in the NFC and it certainly looks that way through three weeks.
“I just think I try so hard because I know how unpredictable the NFL is that I just never feel right picking the teams that were there last year to get back the next year,” Fillipponi said (10:50 in player above). “Not only are you being a coward but you fundamentally don’t get how the NFL changes from year to year.
“Three weeks in, it just feels like we’re on a collision course for the Eagles and 49ers again. They are just heads and shoulders above the competition in the NFC. And this game and this weekend only further cemented that for me.”
The Eagles took it to the Buccaneers in Tampa Bay on Monday night. Philadelphia came away with a 25-11 road victory, including a nine-minute drive to end the game. They’re winning games in the trenches.
“Their lines are just so good. They lost Hargrave to their rival in this situation, San Francisco, and they don’t skip a beat because everybody was stupid on Jalen Carter,” Fillipponi continued. “They don’t miss him because they got Davis and Carter up front. And Graham and Cox and all those guys.”
Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts was the MVP runner-up last season but hasn’t looked the part this year. Still, the Birds are finding ways to win.
“I don’t think Hurts has had a great game yet and they’re still beating teams convincingly,” Fillipponi concluded.
That could be a good thing for the Eagles. They’re finding ways to win without playing their best football.
While the Eagles had two single-score victories to begin the season, the 49ers have had three strong showings. San Francisco has put up exactly 30 points in every game thus far while limiting their opponents to 7, 23, and 12 points.
Much was made about the 49ers losing their quarterbacks in last year’s NFC Championship Game which led to some comments on both sides. The Birds and Niners may be able to settle the score with a rematch in January.
