His buttocks are sublime,” Calvin Klein once said of aspiring underwear model Cosmo Kramer on Season 4 of Seinfeld. A’s backstop Sean Murphy earned similar praise Monday against the Rays, going viral after taking a 74-mph slider off his rear end.

Murphy’s derriere drew widespread applause on social media, garnering millions of views on Twitter while fueling one of the more entertaining comment sections you’ll ever read with butt memes galore

Objectifying the 27-year-old is admittedly juvenile, but after an offseason teardown that reduced Oakland’s payroll to a league-low $33 million ($10 million less than the Mets are paying Max Scherzer this season), at least A’s fans have something to root for this year. Murphy, last year’s American League Gold Glove recipient at catcher, would later score on Seth Brown’s three-run blast to right field, one of four homers slugged by Oakland in a 13-2 rout of Tampa Bay.

Rather than further tax their bullpen in a game that was lost by the second inning (the Rays trailed 8-0 at that point), manager Kevin Cash turned to outfielder Brett Phillips, who was lit up for four runs on three hits in his second career pitching appearance. The fan favorite delivered his usual hijinks, sliding for a spectacular grab in foul territory.

The Rays had been MLB’s last unbeaten team following a three-game sweep of Baltimore on opening weekend.
