Aaron Hicks has no time for Bobby Dalbec’s small talk, apparently.

Like most first basemen, Dalbec has become quite the conversationalist, yucking it up with opponents throughout games as he holds them on.

He’s grown quite fond of some, like Miguel Sano, Ji-man Choi and Brad Miller, but others have been tougher nuts to crack. And as the Red Sox began their season in The Bronx against the New York Yankees, Dalbec was finding Yanks center fielder Aaron Hicks, who is coming off an injury-marred 2021 campaign, won’t really reciprocate.

So, he asked one of the Yankees’ more loquacious players what gives.

“Hicks is super intense,” Dalbec said on WEEI’s “Bradfo Sho” podcast. “I asked Giancarlo, I was like ‘I can’t get anything out of Hicks right now, what’s his deal?’ He goes, ‘He’s just super locked in this year, man.’ I’m like OK, cool. Sounds good. I’ll stay away from it. But those guys are great, like (Aaron) Judge and Giancarlo. … I’ve got nothing else to do over there (but chat).”

Dalbec also said Gleyber Torres tends to be quiet on first.

The chatting at first is a relatively new endeavor for Dalbec, who rose through the minors as a third baseman before getting moved to first since third is well-covered by Rafael Devers.

Judging by the rolodex of guys he is able to shoot the breeze with, it seems like Dalbec is locking down that part of the game. Now, he just needs to figure out how to get through to Hicks.
