Those three aspects of our national pastime all came together in one special moment on Wednesday night during the Cleveland Indians' home game against the Texas Rangers. It was a night where not one, not two, not three but four of Cleveland's hitters were able to leave the yard. As it turned out, they saved the best for last.
It was the best not only because it was so wondrously far, landing high in the bleachers and measuring as a 451-foot bomb, but also because there was a meaningful backstory behind it. Prior that that at-bat, the final of Reyes' four plate appearances in the contest, he had tossed a ball to a fan with cancer and prayed that this time up could be for her.
His wish was granted. He delivered. And he made not only that fan's night, but created a story that has warmed the hearts of baseball fans around the world.
Luckily, there's a lot more where that came from. Reyes is one of the better pure home run hitters in the game, with a career average of 37 per 162 games, and his trademark blasts are even more fun to watch when we know of the special connections behind them.
