Here's why 8 MLB stars will wear No. 21 on the back of their hats

Eight Major League Baseball stars will wear No. 21 on the back of their hats and batting helmets in 2022, with ESPN's Marly Rivera noting that it is "in recognition of the 50th anniversary of Roberto Clemente's tragic passing and as a special tribute to his legacy."

The eight players eligible for the Clemente patch are Albert Pujols, Yadier Molina, Adam Wainwright, Andrew McCutchen, Nelson Cruz, Anthony Rizzo, Clayton Kershaw and Carlos Carrasco; the active players who are former winners of the award named after one of the greatest right fielders and humanitarians in MLB history.

According to MLB.com, "the Roberto Clemente Award is bestowed annually to the player who best represents the game of Baseball through extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy and positive contributions, both on and off the field."

McCutchen -- set to make his debut with the Milwaukee Brewers Thursday -- offered a glimpse into what the patch looks like:

Rivera says that these eight players will be eligible to wear the patch for the rest of their careers if they choose to do so.
