So far, the names connected to the Lions' vacant general manager job have been the standard ones: recently-axed GM's and up-and-coming executives.
Here's a wild card: Seahawks GM John Schneider.
As in, *current* Seahawks GM Schneider, the man who has helped guide Seattle to nine playoff appearances, five division titles, two NFC championships and one Super Bowl victory in 11 years at the helm.
In a "potential blockbuster move," the Lions "plan to pursue" Schneider for their GM job, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
Rapoport calls it "a hire that would send shockwaves around the NFL."
Why would Schneider consider leaving his post? Because he isn't completely in charge in Seattle, where head coach Pete Carroll has "primary authority" over all personnel decisions, according to Rapoport.
That means the Lions -- or any other team -- can try to poach Schneider if they offer him full control of the organization. Schneider, 49, has one year left on his contract with Seattle. Carroll is under contract through 2025.
The Lions began their GM search by interviewing three in-house candidates, and have since interviewed a trio of former GM's in Thomas Dimitroff, Rick Smith and Scott Pioli as well as longtime ESPN analyst Louis Riddick.
