It was a special Wednesday on WFAN’s afternoon drive slate, as Craig Carton and Evan Roberts took the day off and handed over the reins to four people very special to them.
From 2-4 p.m., it was the radio debut of a pair of college students you may have heard of: Sonny Carton, eldest son of Craig, and Colin Russo, the son of none other than Chris “Mad Dog” Russo!
“Today is a special show – there’s going to be a Carton & Russo, and a McMonigle & Lugauer, over the next four hours, and we appreciate you giving us a shot to let some other voices take the microphone,” Craig said at the top of the show. “The notion here is to have a little fun. I heard Colin Russo’s rant on his dad’s show, and my son wants to be in broadcasting, so why not have some fun and let them figure it out by throwing them into the deep end of the pool!”
The second-generation stars took the first two hours to talk a lot of football, a little Knicks, and even a quick segment with Craig’s old partner Boomer Esiason, who called in to praise the duo.
“You and Colin are doing really great! Colin, I’ve never met you, but your father is a lunatic!” Boomer laughed. “But I’m rooting for you Sonny, I remember when you and Lucky would come in and fall asleep in the office! But I think you guys are doing a great job. Don’t listen to any of the crap out there and enjoy yourselves. Keep it up and be yourselves!”
Then, at 4 p.m., the boys turned the show over to Carton & Roberts producers Tommy Lugauer and Chris McMonigle, who got you in the mix with the “Loog-hour” before Big Mac took the power chair for the 5 p.m. hour. McMonigle is no stranger to the WFAN airwaves, holding down the 10 p.m. Saturday-2 a.m. Sunday timeslot, but this was Loogy's "official" debut as a host.
“Afternoon drive, a lot of people asked if I’m nervous, but why would I be? I’m with you!” Lugauer said. “No one is cooler under pressure at the station than C-Mac! And, you’re the only person at this station who has worked with Mike, CMB, Moose & Maggie, and Carton & Roberts. I say this with love…you are the Edwin Jackson of WFAN!”
