Jared Porter was the Mets' general manager for just 37 days before being fired Tuesday morning, after reports surfaced of inappropriate conduct towards a reporter back in 2016.
Team president of baseball operations Sandy Alderson spoke to the media about the situation later Tuesday, and within that, said the team will “sort things out in a day or two” as it relates to their re-opened GM job, and he is confident in the group in place to navigate the waters for now.
“What I would expect is that with the group we have now, we’ll move forward toward spring training. It was late in the process when we hired a GM, and it’s later now,” Alderson said. “We’re on a certain trajectory – a good one, as far as I’m concerned so far – and while removing Jared presents a void, I’m very confident in the group we have to move forward effectively.”
Alderson noted that his “attention to the baseball side will increase a little bit,” but declined to make any concrete statements about the potential future of assistant GM Zack Scott, the runner-up to Porter for the main job, who was hired shortly after Porter to be his top lieutenant.
“I’ll discuss things with the group soon,” Alderson said, noting long-time Mets front office exec John Ricco, scouting directors Bryn Alderson and Tommy Tanous, and multiple members of the research and development teams as the committee that meets daily about baseball operations.
Alderson did note that the ‘larger transactions’ (ostensibly meaning the Lindor/Carrasco trade) are ones where he is ‘mostly involved,’ but the loss of Porter will have its biggest impact in terms of smaller transactions to fill out the roster and team depth.
“One of the things we will be lacking is the same breadth of contacts and info that we were able to get through Jared,” Alderson said. “He has lots of contacts in the game, not just at the GM level. That’s a rich source of info, and can lead to smaller deals that fill out our roster and depth. That’s an area that we’ll have to pick it up. The larger transactions are where I’m mostly involved, but I’m comfortable we’re able to work well in both categories.”
The Mets actually officially announced a trade on Tuesday shortly after the Porter news broke, confirming that they had acquired LHP Joey Lucchesi from San Diego in a three-team deal also involving Pittsburgh.
