Dolphins hire Jeff Hafley as head coach, face quarterback questions

The Miami Dolphins have hired Jeff Hafley as their new head coach, bringing NFL defensive coordinator experience and previous head coaching experience at Boston College. Omar Kelly of the Miami Herald joined The Joe Rose Show and noted Hafley could bring trusted personnel with him from Green Bay, signaling a significant shift in the team’s culture and approach.

Hafley inherits a team in transition, with key questions looming at quarterback. Malik Willis is considered a front-runner, though Kelly and Joe cautioned against overpaying for any quarterback, citing past mistakes and the need to balance talent with salary cap realities. Tua Tagovailoa’s future is also uncertain, with the team likely exploring trade or release options to reset the roster.

Front office changes are also underway. New general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan’s 'final say' approach, emphasizing draft, development, and retention of talent while acknowledging the challenges of player contracts and staff decisions. The Dolphins’ roster will see turnover as they attempt to realign with the new leadership’s vision, including potential departures of high-profile players such as Tyreek Hill and Bradley Chubb.

The Dolphins’ coaching staff and scouting team face scrutiny as Hafley evaluates existing personnel. Some long-tenured coaches could remain, but the focus will be on aligning staff with Hafley’s philosophy.

“We just need a culture change,” Kelly said. The organization has to be on the same page, without backstabbing or old habits, Kelly and Joe discussed. Fans should expect a major reset across both coaching and player personnel as Miami attempts to build a more stable foundation.
