The New York Giants beat the Washington Commanders 14-7 on Sunday for their second win of the season, and there are now some questions about a quarterback controversy between Tyrod Taylor and Daniel Jones.
Head coach Brian Daboll has poured cold water on a quarterback controversy, but some are still questioning whether Taylor should remain the starter when Jones is healthy.
WFAN’s Shaun Morash of the Audacy original podcast “1st & Pod” gave his thoughts on the Giants’ quarterback controversy between Taylor and Jones this week.
“After this Washington game, we’ve now seen two Tyrod Taylor games that have resulted in nine points and 14 points,” Morash said (0:45 in player above). “I will fully tell you, I have been frustrated with Daniel Jones this year but I also don’t think I’ve seen enough from Tyrod Taylor. I feel like we are responding to insane defensive efforts, the fact that the Giants have now been really competitive.
Jones, who the Giants signed to a four-year, $160 million contract this offseason, has been sidelined for two games with a neck injury. Taylor has led the offense to a combined 23 points, as Morash pointed out, although there have been a few turnovers that cost them scoring opportunities.
In his two starts, Taylor has thrown for 479 yards on 42 of 65 passing with two touchdowns and no interceptions. He’s also ran for 49 yards on 12 carries, including a 20-yard scramble against the Commanders.
Winning can change things, but so can the rest of the team getting healthy.
“I think he’s pushed the ball down the field, which is something that Daniel Jones has been scared to do, but I would really like to see Daniel Jones with a healthy Saquon again, Andrew Thomas coming back,” Morash continued. “I don’t think that Tyrod Taylor has at least done enough, in my mind, to make me feel like there is a controversy.”
We’ll see how Taylor and the Giants are able to fair against the stout New York Jets defense this weekend. After that, the Giants hit the road for three straight games in Las Vegas, Dallas, and Washington.
