NHL returning Jan. 13, with Red Wings in realigned Central division

It's been more than nine months since the Red Wings took the ice. Finally, we have a return date.

The NHL announced Sunday it will start the 2021 season Jan. 13. Each team will play 56 games and compete strictly within realigned divisions in order to limit travel amid COVID-19, including one all-Canada division.

The Red Wings will play in the Central Division along with the Hurricanes, Lightning, Panthers, Blue Jackets, Blackhawks, Predators and Stars.

The top four teams in each division will make the playoffs, with each series following the traditional best-of-seven format. The regular season will conclude May 8, with the playoffs slated to end in mid-July.

Home teams will host games to start the year, with the possibility of establishing neutral site if the circumstances demand it. Little Caesars Arena is not expected to host fans to start the season.

The East Division will be comprised of the Bruins, Sabres, Devils, Islanders, Rangers, Flyers, Penguins and Capitals.

The West Division will be comprised of the Ducks, Coyotes, Avalanche, Kings, Wild, Sharks, Blues and Golden Knights.

The North Division (all-Canada) will feature the Flames, Oilers, Canadiens, Senators, Maple Leafs, Canucks and Jets.
