Dominic Smith had his fingerprints all over Tuesday night’s game at Citi Field, reaching twice with a double and a run scored while also contributing a stellar catch to rob Willson Contreras of extra bases in New York’s 3-2 victory over the visiting Cubs. That extended the surging Mets’ lead in the division to a season-high five games over second-place Philadelphia.

After the game, Pete Alonso joined fans in serenading Smith, celebrating the outfielder’s 26th trip around the sun with a jubilant rendition of “Happy Birthday.”

Smith has come alive this series, ending an 0-for-20 dry spell Monday night with a towering blast to deep center. Smith’s solo job traveled an estimated 433 feet, measuring just two feet shy of his longest homer of 2021. Alonso was the first to congratulate Smith, greeting his teammate by flashing an imaginary camera at home plate.

The Mets, winners of five of their last six games and seven of their past nine, seem to be loving life right now. And why not, with Francisco Lindor finally showing signs of life (.298/.400/.532 batting line this month) and Jacob deGrom looking like a Cy Young shoe-in? There’s plenty of time for it to all fall apart, but with a third of the season in the books, the NL East-leading Mets have to like where they’re at.
