The fate of Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield remains uncertain -- but he's reportedly trying to stay sharp in anticipation of latching on with another team.

The four-year veteran is working out with free-agent wide receivers Cole Beasley and Danny Amendola in their home state of Texas, according to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network. Also involved is Giants wideout Alex Bachman.

However, Mayfield is unlikely to report for Browns spring camp, Garafolo added.

"Mayfield is continuing to get the work in, [and] I would expect that's the way it's going to continue until the situation with the Browns resolves itself. I wouldn't imagine he'll go back to Cleveland for the spring session."

The former Oklahoma Sooners star reportedly requested a trade amid the Browns' pursuit of recently acquired three-time Pro Bowler Deshaun Watson, but no such deal for Mayfield has materialized yet.

The Browns, for their part, have said they are hoping for a speedy resolution to the tricky situation, which has seen them fall out with the quarterback they drafted first overall back in 2018.

Complicating matters is Mayfield's hefty 2022 salary of $18.8 million, which would represent a massive cap hit if he were to be cut rather than traded. That price tag also makes finding a trade partner difficult, Garafolo reported, since Mayfield might only be competing for a starting job, and could conceivably serve as a backup.

Meanwhile, Beasley is still drawing interest in free agency, Garafolo reported, but is "being patient" while awaiting the "right deal" and "right situation." The former Cowboys and Bills slot man saw a decline in production late last season in Buffalo owing to broken ribs, the report said.

Amendola, 36, was limited to eight games with the Texans last season due to injury. The former Patriots slot receiver has bounced around between the Dolphins, Lions and Houston after winning two Super Bowls in New England.
