The Marlins spent Memorial Day at Niagara Falls

There’s not much time for sightseeing during the MLB season, but the Marlins squeezed in a quick trip to Niagara Falls Monday, celebrating their Memorial Day at one of America’s most celebrated landmarks. The Marlins got a jump start on their holiday weekend when Sunday’s game in Boston was postponed (they’ll make it up next Monday).

Obviously, Western New York is not the tropical paradise the Marlins are used to back home in Miami (slender outfielder Magneuris Sierra nearly blew off the boat), but players seemed to enjoy the experience, swapping out their bats and gloves for camera phones and plastic ponchos. What better way to spend an off day than reenacting the “King of the World” scene from Titanic in front of one of the world’s great natural beauties?

One paradox of professional sports is that, despite constant traveling, schedules are so condensed that teams rarely get to explore the cities they’re staying in. Props to the Marlins for carving out time as tourists, taking in the scenic masterpiece that is Niagara Falls.

The Marlins, of course, are in town to face the Toronto Blue Jays, who are temporarily taking up residence in Buffalo until Canada loosens its travel restrictions, which have been in place since the COVID pandemic began last year. Despite their losing record (24-28), the Marlins actually lead the NL East in run differential (+10), a product of their elite pitching (3.40 ERA). If only the offense could hold up its end of the bargain (fifth-fewest runs scored).
