Torres, Voit, Frazier, Dom Smith all qualify for Super Two arbitration status

The Yankees' offseason just got more expensive.

According to MLB insider Ken Rosenthal, three Yankees - Clint Frazier, Luke Voit, and Gleyber Torres - have all qualified for arbitration as Super Two players, as has versatile Mets star Dom Smith.

In addition, Mets beat writer Tim Britton reports that J.D. Davis will qualify as well.

Normally, players are eligible for salary arbitration after achieving three full years of MLB service time, but Super Two status is given each year to the top 22 percent of players who have between two and three years of service time.

The actual cutoff number changes every year, based on that metric, and last year's cutoff was 2 years, 119 days. Per baseball-reference.com, Voit has 2 years, 169 days of time (three days shy of a full three years); Torres has 2 years, 162 days; Frazier has 2 years, 133 days; and Smith has 2 years, 146 days. Davis is at 2 years, 137 days, so if Rosenthal's source is correct, than he will qualify as well.

While the status doesn't change any of the players' free agency timelines (they are all still set to hit the market after the 2024 season), the Super Two surely means a large raise above the roughly $600K prorated each of them made in 2020 - something that the luxury tax-conscious Yankees now must build into their budgets, if they hadn't already - and means an increased importance on continued performance, as evidenced by the amount of final-year arbitration-eligible players non-tendered around MLB this winter.
