The Mets, already frustrated with what has been a brutal offensive slump, had some tempers flare along with the Phillies on Friday night.
After Philadelphia and lefty reliever Jose Alvarado elected to intentionally walk the go-ahead run to face lefty Dominic Smith in the top of the eighth, Alvarado struck out Smith to end the threat and squash a rare New York rally, and Alvarado let Smith know about it.
After Alvarado began jawing at Smith as he walked off the mound, Smith fired back, and quickly, Alvarado’s glove was on the infield grass and the benches were cleared.
Phillies catcher J.T. Realmuto held Smith back while Alec Bohm held Alvarado back, as the two continued to yell at each other. Alvarado may have been frustrated after Smith had asked for time from the home plate umpire to possibly disrupt Alvarado’s rhythm.
Instead, Smith struck out and fell deeper into a 2-for-22 slump, and the Mets lost 2-1 against a Phillies team without several starters, including Bryce Harper.
Alvarado was ejected, even though his night was done anyway.
