Why every NFL team should be jealous of Howie Roseman

Howie Roseman worked his way up the Philadelphia Eagles organization and is now regarded as one of the best executives in football.

Roseman helped put together the Eagles’ roster for their runs to the Super Bowl in 2017 and 2022. It’s no coincidence that he was named the PFWA Executive of the Year for both of those seasons as well.

The Eagles’ executive vice president and general manager has made several savvy movies in recent years to set the franchise up for success.

Danny Parkins and Andrew Fillipponi were joined by Adam Lefkoe on Audacy’s original podcast “1st & Pod” and they explained why every NFL team should be jealous of Roseman.

“I feel like if I was going to be jealous of a team for a non-quarterback – because as a Bears fan, I’m jealous of every team that has a franchise quarterback,” Parkins said (7:10 in player above). “I feel like every team in the NFL should be jealous of Howie Roseman.”

While Roseman is now one of the best in the business, it wasn’t always that way.

“You have to understand, when I blasted Nick Sirianni on Twitter, the hire of that, there was a series of events in which you would be talking completely differently about Howie Roseman,” Lefkoe said. “This guy took Jalen Reagor over Justin Jefferson. This guy took J.J. Arcega-Whiteside over DK Metcalf. He was constantly missing.

“They had an albatross contract in Carson Wentz. Everything was deteriorating. They move on from a Super Bowl-winning coach in Doug Pederson. Remember, we’re two, three years removed and everyone around the NFL is going ‘What are you doing? This is all over the place.’”

Roseman didn’t get caught up in those mistakes, though. He was able to move on and get the most of out what were more-or-less lost assets for the Eagles.

“Howie’s ability to be the smart guy in the room that doesn’t get caught up in the sunken cost fallacy and is able to cut ties a little bit before you should. To turn Carson Wentz into that Indianapolis Colts trade. To give them an extra first,” Lefkoe continued. “Then be able every year for about three or four years to keep packaging picks to get more first-rounders in ensuing years.”

After missing on Jefferson and Metcalf, Roseman didn’t whiff on the Eagles’ current star wideout with those additional first-round picks.

“One of them turned into DeVonta Smith. One of them turned into A.J. Brown. Erasing his wide receiver mistakes,” Lefkoe said. “And look, if you don’t take Jalen Huts in the second round, it’s the Jalen Reagor draft. But instead, it’s the Jalen Hurts draft.”

It is indeed the Jalen Hurts draft and this is Jalen Hurts’ team for the foreseeable future.
