The New York Yankees and San Diego Padres discussed a trade involving slugger Joey Gallo before the season, but a deal wasn't ultimately reached, Jon Heyman writes for The New York Post.

Despite Gallo slashing .160/.303/.404 after the Yankees acquired him from the Texas Rangers last summer, Heyman says that Brian Cashman and company were still looking for "a return befitting his ability, not his recent achievements."

Instead, the Yankees opted to keep Gallo, hoping for a bounce-back season from the 28-year-old in a contract year. To this point, such a resurgence hasn't materialized.

Gallo is currently slashing .121/.256/.121 with a -0.5 fWAR in the early days of the 2022 season, with an astronomical 38.5% strikeout rate. Striking out in more than a third of his at-bats isn't uncharacteristic for Gallo, but it becomes especially unacceptable when you consider that he has zero home runs and zero RBIs thus far.

There are certainly teams that covet Gallo when he's locked in; he has 40-home run power and is a two-time Gold Glove Award winner. But it appears like if the Yankees end up trading Gallo this summer -- as opposed to letting him walk in free agency after the season -- it will be an addition-by-subtraction type deal, not one with a top-tier prospect returning to the Bronx.
