LISTEN NOW: Brian McKnight talks with Tony Scott
"Last year my wife and I had a little baby boy, and he is the greatest thing that has ever happened, and it inspired an entire album of music," McKnight shared. "That’s what this is, a bunch of songs that I’ve written since the day he was born that are all for him — little baby Brian.”
A seasoned and accomplished musician, Brian and Tony talked about how if the music dream never panned out the way it has, sports would have been the next dream, noting he believes he would have successfully warmed the bench for any NBA team.
While not disparaging Mario for his recent comments about how he places himself on the Mount Rushmore of R&B, McKnight shared he would ever say the same about himself. “We’d have to define what R&B is. And I can’t put myself on the level of The Temptations, and Four Tops, and The Isley Brothers, and Teddy Pendergrass, and Stevie Wonder, and Marvin Gaye. Because without them, I don’t do the music that I do, so how can I put myself on their level, but that’s just me.”
Answering a curious Tony who asked if there is some degree to which you have to believe that to have the confidence to do what you do, McKnight expressed, “No, I think you can be confident at what you do without comparing yourself to the greatest people who have ever done it. That’s for the fans to do, not for me to do.”
For Brian it’s not about competing with other artists out there, “I’m competing with myself. Constantly striving to out perform a a previous hit."
Brian also talked a bit about some of his favorite and most cherished collabs, the new wave of artists, and more. To hear it all, listen to the entire interview above.
