Cast of 'The Chi' share their love for the show and excitement for new season

'Rooted in authenticity'

Lena Waithe's hit series, The Chi, is back for it's sixth season giving fans 16 episodes this time around, the most from any of the other seasons. Luke James, Jason Weaver and Jacob Latimore dropped by V-103 Atlanta's Big Tigger Morning Show to talk about what fans can expect this new season, what they enjoy about their roles, and their musical backgrounds.

Diving into the controversy surrounding Luke James' character, Victor, who dates transgender women, James says despite the negative recognition he receives, playing his role has been "awesome."

"Its an interesting thing to be a part of, in a sense a vessel on a show and for me and it was awesome to be invited on this particular show," he said, appreciating how authentic the show is by highlights all the different stories that happen within the Black community and sparking taboo conversations.

"For whatever reason people think it doesn't exist, we exist, they exist, we out her so it's a beautiful thing... representation matters," James said. "I think that's the beauty of The Chi."

Despite their characters have extremely different paths, one thing they could all agree on is their love for this show. Weaver, a southside Chicago native said "what makes The Chi so brilliant in its own right, is the fact that its rooted in authenticity... I'm a south sider so I know!"
