You cannot talk about classic black cinema without including the 1999 film, The Best Man and its follow up film, The Best Man Holiday. Actor Morris Chestnut and filmmaker Malcolm D. Lee stopped by V-103 Atlanta’s The Big Tigger Morning Show to discuss the new limited series, The Best Man: The Final Chapters.

“The intention was always to do a third movie after Best Man Holiday… I also had a fourth movie in my head,” Lee shared that he had always had intentions to do a third movie and even had ideas for a fourth but through the struggles of budgets, COVID, and constantly changing schedules, all things pointed towards starting a limited series.

While Chestnut and Lee refused to spill any tea about the series, they both assured that fans can expect “exactly what you [fans] been getting.”

“I don’t want to give anything away but like, everything that we’ve expected from The Best Man movies like laughter, emotion, heart and some layered characters,” are what fans of the franchise can look forward to.

Big Tigger asked how will this series make its mark now that black cinema is often criticized for having the same underlying tones and storylines nowadays, but Lee is confident that won’t be the case and referenced the ending of The Best Man Holiday, which if you remember, left everyone shocked and heartbroken. “We’re not going to do what's expected,” Lee said.

The eight episode series will be exclusively streamed on Peacock starting Dec 22 and fans can look forward to hour long episodes to binge.

In a daring game of ones gotta go, Big Tigger gave Chestnut the choices of Boyz n the Hood, Perfect Holiday, Best Man and Two Can Play That Game where he easily got rid of the Perfect Holiday. Lee’s choices were Barbershop, Best Man, Girls Trip and Space Jam: A New Legacy and while he struggled to let one go he ended up caving in to let Barbershop go.
