The following is a review by Jodi Morrissey, the Mike and Mary Concert Surrogate. Her donation to Journey Found has given her this spotlight for 2023-2024.
"Wow, where do I begin? Cirque du Soleil’s latest show, BAZZAR, opened Wednesday night under the Big Top on Market St in Hartford to a packed house, and they will be here through May 5th.
Cirque du Soleil has been around for years, has toured the world and taken up residency in Las Vegas. Yet they always find a way to come up with something new and remain modern while staying true to their roots in circus acts of old. In thinking about how I could describe and summarize the show, I came up with a list of adjectives: extravagant, brilliant, strength, symmetry, grace, precision, perfection, excitement.
As the show begins we are introduced to The Maestro who pulls the audience in: he is a clown, ringmaster, and conductor wrapped into a character reminiscent of Joel Gray‘s Master of Ceremonies in Cabaret. The troupe takes you through amazing feats of acrobatics, modern and lyrical dance, drumming, Mallakhamb pole gymnastics from India, tightrope, trapeze, and so much more.
The acts were accompanied by talented musicians and a phenomenal singer. There just aren’t enough superlative words to describe the show. I won’t say more, so no spoilers. You’ll have to see it for yourself. I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to enjoy this experience."
