As several neighboring states alter their COVID-19 protocols to match a surge in cases, Gov. Ned Lamont is ordering a return to what he calls a "modified" Phase 2 reopening. The changes take effect on Friday.

Restaurants will revert to 50% indoor capacity (down from 75%), and they'll have to close at 9:30 pm. The early closing time and an 8-person maximum per table are intended to discourage a reported bar-like atmosphere at some restaurants.


"There are some tables that have an awful lot of people at them," said Gov. Lamont at his latest news conference, aired live on WTIC, "that are acting more like parties, less like a restaurant."

The Connecticut Restaurant Association says the state's move presents "a renewed challenge to Connecticut restaurants."

Association head Scott Dolch tells WTIC Radio that over the last two weeks, more than 600 restaurants that have closed indefinitely or permanently.
