MERIDEN, CONN (WTIC Radio)-Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) has announced a bi-partisan measure he introduced to fight big tech for the proliferation of child sexual abuse online has passed the Judiciary Committee.

The Eliminating Abusive and Rampant Neglect Interactive Technologies Act allows law enforcement and survivors to hold big tech companies responsible for the distribution of the material that Blumenthal called horrific.

Tammy Snead works for the Human Traffic Services Division of the Department of Children and Families. She said the 310 reports of various on-line child abuse in 2022represents a 29-percent increase from the previous year.

The measure would eliminate section 230, which Blumenthal said provides a legal shield for the big tech companies.

But he said the firms have "an army of lawyers and lobbyists" creating opposition.
