WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WTIC Radio)—New England's Great State Fair returns this year at full capacity after the annual event was cancelled last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
"Full capacity. Unencumbered fair," Big E President and CEO Eugene Cassidy said when announcing the fair's return Tuesday.
Despite the full reopening, Cassidy said COVID-19 is still being considered. Unvaccinated guests will be asked to wear a mask when attending the event, he said.
"We will have enhanced cleaning protocols," he said, "but the good thing is the agriculturalist and the fair industry is very in tune with cleanliness and keeping people's health secure."
There will also be handwashing and sanitizing stations available, officials said.
The Eastern States Exposition will feature new surprises this year, including a giant Ferris wheel that was finished during the pandemic last year after five years of construction.
"Wait 'till you see it," Cassidy said, "It's over 150 feet tall. It's the biggest Ferris wheel on the road."
The Big E will be held September 17 through October 3. Connecticut Day is scheduled for Wednesday, September 22.
