BT: Brian Daboll's future as Giants head coach still up in the air depending how year three goes
As the Giants enter year three of the Joe Schoen/Brian Daboll era, BT believes the head coach may not be on as stable ground as some believe.
Sure, Schoen has deep ties to Daboll, but after a big step back in the wins and losses department last year, coupled with reported feuds with Wink Martindale that ended in the defensive coordinator’s departure, BT says Daboll has something to prove in 2024.
“I know Wink is gone and some other situations that were diffused during the offseason have gone away, but the future of Daboll here is still, to me, up in the air,” BT said. “And I’m a huge fan. I wish he was coaching the Jets! If that’s not a strong endorsement, I don’t know what to tell you.”
While BT loves Daboll has a head coach, he doesn’t agree with the belief that Daboll’s job can’t be on the line this season, as he could see the Giants making a change if things go haywire again in 2024.
“I disagree. I think that he could be,” BT said. “It’s farfetched to think that, no matter what happens, Brian Daboll will be back for year four. I don’t think that’s the case. He’s got a lot to prove.”
Daboll won Coach of the Year in 2022, his first year with the Giants, but his second season didn’t go nearly as well. Big Blue has a recent history of head coaches having short stints, and the organization is looking for stability, but BT says that doesn’t mean Daboll has any kind of immunity in year three.
“One thing that Mara is not gonna put up with is that sloppiness and that energy and that behind-the-scenes stuff that was going on last year,” BT said. “Daboll, to me, is hit or miss this year. I don’t think that it’s reckless to say the he is, on some level…it’s prove-it time.
“The one thing that worries me a little about Daboll is his temperament.”
