Gio goes off on Giants play calling: "We're here to hang around"

The Giants played things close, but ultimately couldn’t find the end zone in a 20-15 loss to the Cowboys on Thursday night.

Big Blue settled for five field goals, and it was enough to set Gio off on Big Blue and Brian Daboll’s play calling, which he says should have been much more aggressive.

“It’s annoying. It’s frustrating,” Gio said. “It doesn’t seem like the Giants had the same type of mentality that everyone else had heading into this game.

“We talked about how critical it was to change the narrative...and they didn’t play like that! They didn’t! Fourth-and-goal on the four to finally beat those guys who have beaten the snot out of you for years, and you trot out your backup kicker to kick a 22-yard field goal? Be Aggressive! Throw the ball into the end zone! Nobody is gonna blame you for it.”

Daboll’s aggression has been a topic of criticism since last season, as many fans believe he has taken his foot off the gas since his first season as head coach, when he went for the two-point conversion, and the win, against the Titans in Week 1. Gio was hoping to see more of that given where the Giants are, but he says Daboll disappointed in that regard.

“What do you have to lose?” Gio said. “Nobody expected you to be good anyway this year. Be aggressive.

“It just felt like ‘We’re just here to hang around. We’re not here to win. We’re here to hang around and see what happens.’”
