Sal: Jets would have chance to compete in 2025 with Aaron Rodgers
The Jets have seemingly hit rock bottom as the head coach and general manager have been fired, reports surface of ownership meddling with key roster decisions, all while the team sits at 3-8 and out of playoff contention.
The once hyped season has come crashing down, and an all-out house cleaning seems to be in progress. But Sal Licata says whoever takes over for Joe Douglas and Robert Saleh should give it another go with Aaron Rodgers at quarterback for one more year.
“They would be making a big mistake if they let Aaron Rodgers go. Rodgers is not the problem,” Sal said. “If they bring in a real head coach and keep Aaron Rodgers, they can have success as soon as next year. There are pieces in place with this team. Obviously you have to build a better offensive line, but there are pieces on that defense that can be coached to being better. There are skill positions on that offense that can be coached to being better.”
Rodgers has certainly not been part of the solution, as his production has been down across the board, and his disastrous performance on a potential game-winning drive on Sunday helped all but end the Jets season. Still, Sal believes another offseason and another year removed from major Achilles surgery could help Rodgers find his way back towards his MVP self, and if the new regime can put a solid offensive line in front of him, the team could compete in 2025.
“Aaron Rodgers is not the problem here, and I hope the Jets can identify a head coach/GM combination that can come in here and see what can still be salvaged from this mess over the last couple years,” Sal said. “And believe that Aaron Rodgers can lead the team to success next year.
“If you blow it all up and start from scratch, it’s gonna take years - if you’re lucky - to get back to where you might have the talent to win some games that the Jets have right now.”
