Tiki doesn’t believe the Yankees need a new manager to turn things around, but he does believe the organization needs a new identity.
“That manta, ‘We are the Yankees,’ doesn’t mean the same thing anymore,” Tiki said. “It’s not like you’re saying, ‘We are the dynasty Yankees.’
“This team doesn’t have an identity. Other than what Judge did last year and Cole being fantastic, those are individual things. As a team, what’s the identity?”
Right now, the Yankees are lacking a sense of direction, and Tiki wants to see more of a clear sense of who they are, and that lack of ability to acknowledge who they are is a big reason why the outlook of the team moving forward is so murky.
“Think about the Mets from a year ago,” Tiki said. “They didn’t hit a ton of home runs, but they hustled, made every single play, defended better than anybody, and their pitching was fantastic. The best teams have an identity…and direction. A plan. The Yankees don’t have that.
“They have a couple elite players, but they don’t have an identity.”
