DETROIT (WWJ) - A juvenile suspect is in custody, but police say they are still searching for two others who led them on a high-speed chase from Macomb County to Detroit in a stolen vehicle early Wednesday morning.
The incident unfolded around 4:30 a.m. when Macomb County Sheriff's deputies were called to the scene of a larceny-from-vehicle in progress at the Village Green Apartments near Jefferson and Shook Road in Harrison Township. The suspects were allegedly taking items out of a vehicle and placing them into a black Honda Pilot.
When deputies arrived, the suspects took off in the Honda, leading police on a chase at a high rate of speed on westbound I-94 into Detroit and then exited at Conner Street. The suspects quickly tried to get back onto I-94 and even though the entrance was blocked with a barricade, they smashed their way through and then abandoned the SUV on the freeway. Authorities said it turns out the Pilot had been stolen from another jurisdiction.
The suspects took off running from the vehicle toward the nearby Travel Inn.
The sheriff's office said Wednesday afternoon that a juvenile suspect had been taken into custody and was lodged at the Macomb County Juvenile Justice Center in Mt. Clemens. The other two suspects remained at large Wednesday evening, but police had not provided descriptions of them.
No injuries were reported.
I-94 was closed while police were gathering evidence but has since reopened to traffic.
The incident remains under investigation and authorities are asking anyone with details to contact Det. Holmes at 586-307-9361.
