DETROIT (WWJ) - Investigators believe an apartment fire that killed a mother and young child in Detroit was intentionally set.

WWJ's Charlie Langton reports that a suspect was arrested Wednesday in connection with the fatal blaze in a unit in a building at 9544 Brace Street, near Chicago and the Southfield Freeway, Tuesday evening.

The person in custody was not immediately identified, with expected arson charges pending. A motive is unclear at this time.

Deputy Fire Commissioner Dave Fornell said a 7-year-old boy was hospitalized following fire that claimed the lives of his 32-year-old mother and 4-year-old sister. The boy suffered from smoke inhalation, officials said, but was expected to be OK.

Fornell said a preliminary investigation found fire started in the stove, but arson investigators were called to the scene to look into it further.

The damage was believed to be contained to the family's apartment.
