ROSCOMMON COUNTY (WWJ) - One man is recovering after a train collided with a broken down snowmobile during a major winter storm in Northern Michigan on Friday evening, authorities say.
The Richfield Township Department of Public Safety said officers responded to the crash just after 8:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 12, in Roscommon County.
According to the department, the rider was not on the snowmobile and was assisting a stuck machine on the tracks when the train came through.
One person was taken to the hospital in stable condition.
While no additional details were released by police, Dorothy Schulist Kinnunen of Westland identified the injured as her husband in a comment on the department's post to Facebook.
While she said he had been discharged from the hospital without any broken bones, he was feeling "pretty beat up."
According to Schulist Kinnunen, her husband and another rider were going through the area when the other sled broke down.
"They didn't realize they were on the track because of all the snow," she said in her post. "My husband went back to help him when the accident happened."
The National Weather Service Gaylord forecasted 10-12 inches of snow to fall in Roscommon County during a major winter storm that spawned off Blizzard warnings and impacted almost the entire state of Michigan on Friday.
"Strong wind gusts of 35-50+ mph will combine with high snowfall rates of 1-2” per hour to create near-zero visibility," the NWS had warned
The department added at the end of their social media update on the incident for people to use "extreme caution and be aware of your surroundings."
