STERLING HEIGHTS (WWJ) - State troopers are looking into the circumstances surrounding an officer-involved shooting in Sterling Heights that sent a fleeing suspect to the hospital on Thursday.
Michigan State Police said detectives have been called in to investigate the incident, which began just after 11 p.m. when a Sterling Heights police officer tried to initiate a traffic stop on a Chrysler 300.
According to WWJ reporter Charlie Langton, the Chrysler caught the attention of police for having tinted windows and driving without headlights on.
"But the Chrysler 300 took off near 15 Mile and Van Dyke area and then it came to speeds at about a 60 miles an hour," Langton added.
Police pursued the vehicle for a short distance before they ended up in the area of 11000 Forrer Court, a dead-end street where police blocked in the fleeing driver.
"But as the Chrysler 300 tried to get out, it came at the cops," Langton said. "The cop pulled out his gun and fired a number of shots into the Chrysler 300."
The driver was struck twice, officials said, and was taken to St. John Macomb where he was reported to be in stable condition.
Langton -- who reported live from the scene early Friday morning -- noted saw at least four shots on the driver's side window of the suspect vehicle which police discovered had been reported stolen out of Detroit.
The case has since been handed off to troopers, as is protocol for officer-involved shootings.
"Michigan State Police will conduct a thorough investigation to figure out exactly what went on," Langton added.
The suspect's identity was not released as of Friday morning. Additional details are expected to be made public as the investigation continues.
