2 children killed, 3 others injured in devastating Canton mobile home fire
CANTON (WWJ) -- Two children are dead, and three more people, including a child, are in the hospital after a devastating fire in Canton over the weekend.
Officials said the fire broke out at around 5:40 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 24, at the Glen Ridge Mobile Home Community on Haggerty Rd.
Canton fire Chief Christopher Stoecklein said three children who were inside the home were taken to the hospital in critical condition. Two have since died from their injuries.
Reporting from the scene Monday morning, WWJ Newsradio 950's Charlie Langton said neighbors are sharing heartbreak and disbelief over the tragic loss.
All three kids were under the age of five, said Langton.
The surviving child remains in critical condition at this time. The children's two parents were also taken to the hospital, where they were listed in stable condition.
Langton spoke with Wendy Herndon, who lives next door and shares a driveway with the family.
"They were the sweetest, most loving little kids," Herndon said, through tears. "I just hear their laughter in my head in my yard all the time. I can't believe that they're gone."
On Monday, Michigan State Police investigators, along with Canton Police and Fire were all on the scene.
"There are two Canto police officers guarding this, crime scene tape is still up, and Michigan State Police literally just arrived on the scene with accelerant dogs as well as explosive dogs, obviously are trying to determine the cause of this fire," Langton said.
The home is considered a total loss.
The names of those involved are being withheld at this time, as the investigation continues.
