Coast Guard, local authorities rescue at least 20 people stranded on ice floe in northern Ohio

LAKE ERIE (WWJ) - The U.S. Coast Guard saved multiple people stranded on an ice floe in northern Ohio.

According to a Tweet from the U.S. Coast Guard Great Lakes account, at least 20 people were “stranded on an ice floe a mile off shore near Catawba Island State Park, OH.”

Coast Guard helicopters from Detroit and nearby stations are assisting with the rescue. Local authorities are also involved in rescue operations.

In an update, the Coast Guard announced that all 20 people were on shore. Coast Guard airboats from Marblehead rescued nine people from the ice, with local authorities rescuing four. Seven people "self rescued."

Catawba Island State Park, located in Port Clinton, is northwest of Cedar Point.

Authorities are reminding people who go out on the ice that no ice is safe.
